The PC Decrapifier

Title is a bit odd but to the point. Read on and see why the PC Decrapifier just might be the “must have” tool for new PC buyers.

Remember when you bought that last desktop or laptop and couldn’t wait to get it home? Remember the feeling of awe when you finally got it out of the box? The thrill of getting things all wired up and ready to go? And finally pressing the power button to boot into it for the very first time…only to be greeted by all those icons and pesky software bugs that were installed by the manufacturer. You know the ones…they keep prompting you to load them up so they can pester you to buy their services.

Well,no more my PC buying friends! Enter the PC Decrapifier!

PC DecrapifierYou spend your hard-earned money on a new PC and the vendor uses it as a billboard of sorts. That’s where the PC Decrapifier, created by Jason York, comes in. This handy little program automates the uninstall process for many trial and adware titles and also cleans out many startup entries.

Mr. York got the idea for this neat little app when helping a friend set up his new laptop a while back. He was shocked to see just how much effort was required to get the machine in a usable state right out of the box.

It’s also good to know that not all of these pre-loaded programs are un-needed. Acrobat Reader or the Roxio or Nero Burning CD/DVD software is indeed useful. But most of the other extras are not so useful and are much more intrusive than anything.

The adware is the worst: Ebay ads, online games, music services, and anything else that sends you online to a website where you may purchase stuff or sign up for services. Trialware, or pre-loaded software that functions only for a short, set period can be a bit of a pain too. They can be of use for those who may want to try their service but the constant nagging to convert to a paid version is the part that keeps you wondering why you clicked the link in the first place.

Taken from the PC Decrapifier website:

The PC Decrapifier attempts to remove all of the crap on your PC that you never asked for or wanted. To manually remove all of this stuff by hand can take at least an hour (depending on the severity of the infestation.) The PC Decrapifier will detect the ‘crap’ on your system, you choose what to uninstall, then sit back and let the PC Decrapifier work its magic.

The PC Decrapifier will uninstall many of the common trialware and annoyances found on many of the PCs from big name OEMs. You get to see the list of items it detects and then choose what will be removed automatically.

I think that if more and more people complained to the vendors about this, they would take notice and stop adding all this bloatware. Dell has taken notice though and now offers an opt-out for their PC’s. That’s good news.

For all those out there that are looking to buy a new PC in the near future, feel assured that the PC Decrapifier has your back! And thanks to Jason York, we have yet another valuable tool in our PC toolboxes. ;)

I would also like to say that I’ve not yet to date noticed this bloatware issue in my Ubuntu Linux desktop. Maybe the Windows folks would like to take note of this too. :D
