Renew Your .Com Domains Before Oct. 1

Just read this on Dave Zan’s Domain Name blog and thought it fair to spread the word to those who may want to get ahead of the increase. Read the full story on Dave’s blog post below.

Renew Your .Com Domains Before Oct. 1

As an update to this story, I just got the following news off my Google Reader.

Taken in full from Domain Name Wire:

GoDaddy Jacks Up Domain Prices — Again

.Net and .Org prices jump to $15.19.

Just a few days after we swallowed the news that GoDaddy increased .net and .org prices to 13.19, and a few weeks after the company claimed Yahoo “Jumped the Shark” by raising its domain prices to $35, GoDaddy has hiked prices again.

.Net and .Org domain names will now set you back $15.19. It’s not as big of a deal as Yahoo’s (NASDAQ: YHOO) hike to $35, but it seems odd to call out a competitor for drastically raising prices when you also decide to jack up your price 50% or so.

Domain investors that own large portfolios are stuck with a few options: join the discount domain club, spend your time looking for coupon codes, or transfer your domains to other companies.

The discount domain club offers .net and .org domains for $7.19. As for coupon codes, there are a multitude out there on the web. One reader pointed out a coupon that was working as of yesterday: TEST99 gives you .com domains for only 99 cents.

If you want to transfer your domains to a lower cost provider, be sure to not change your registrant name in whois.

It appears that GoDaddy’s pricing strategy is to advertise $9.99 .com domains (really $10.19 when adding the ICANN fee) and then sell customers alternative extensions priced 50% more than many competitors. It may boost GoDaddy’s bottom line — but the company needs to message it correctly to big portfolio holders.

My first Microsoft commercial!

Thought I’d never see one and sure enough, there it was: less than 2 minutes remaining in the half between the Giants and Redskins and here’s Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates himself in a shoe store.

What a let down! Jerry helping Bill try shoes on with comic banter and the only reference to anything innovative concerning Microsoft was at the end with Jerry asking Bill if M/S was coming out with an editable operating system in the near future. Bill responds with a twitch of his ass. Actually, to be fair, Jerry asked that Bill reply with a sign of adjusting his shorts thus Bill twitching his arse.

Guess that’s M/S’s way of getting even with Apple’s commercials. Well, Apple has better commercials.

Oh, by the way…the Giants were leading by 9 at the half. Manning’s looking good as well as the rest of the Giants team.

Hurricanes and Brave Souls

Not trying to capitalize on a horrific event even though this seems like it’s doing just that but after reading an entry in my Google Reader just now about a New Orleans data center’s employees riding out the storm in their data center plus providing coverage from their windows, I had to sit down and write this down just in case anyone else might stumble across this blog and find theirs in passing.

Their About Us page is quoted below:

GustavBloggers is group of concerned technies from the Internet sector. We are based in New Orleans and survived Katrina from a New Orleans skyrise with NO DOWNTIME. We work for a group of related companies that includes Parked.com, Intercosmos Media Group, directNIC.com, Zipa.com, and ModernDomainer.com.

Geez! These folks have been through this before and it’s happening again. That’s some bad luck and it’s gotta stink that it’s happening again so soon. But enough with my drival, let me link you to thier blog so you can get the real scoop, as it happens. They’re keeping things updated almost by the minute!

They have a post up about how to help too. It’s here for those of you wanting to find out what you can do. Good luck guys!

Some calm before the storm

Hard to believe the month of June is almost over! Where did the time go? Guess that’s what’s to be expected when I stay this busy, huh? Well let’s catch up a bit and then let the storm bring it on.

Been going to PT (physical therapy) lately for my knee. Seems it developed a bit of a problem since last Fall. It’s getting better so that’s good. The extra gas it’s taking to make the 3 visits a week is getting old!

The new Alabama Star Wars costuming group’s site is coming along slowly but surely. They’ve got a great graphic artist among their ranks too. I’ll simply refer to him by his username of “Kenobe” here but let me tell you his work is top-notch.

We’ve been busy installing galleries, sites and all sorts of cool, new things for their new site so when it goes live, it should be something to gawk over. (more…)
