Hurricanes and Brave Souls

Not trying to capitalize on a horrific event even though this seems like it’s doing just that but after reading an entry in my Google Reader just now about a New Orleans data center’s employees riding out the storm in their data center plus providing coverage from their windows, I had to sit down and write this down just in case anyone else might stumble across this blog and find theirs in passing.

Their About Us page is quoted below:

GustavBloggers is group of concerned technies from the Internet sector. We are based in New Orleans and survived Katrina from a New Orleans skyrise with NO DOWNTIME. We work for a group of related companies that includes Parked.com, Intercosmos Media Group, directNIC.com, Zipa.com, and ModernDomainer.com.

Geez! These folks have been through this before and it’s happening again. That’s some bad luck and it’s gotta stink that it’s happening again so soon. But enough with my drival, let me link you to thier blog so you can get the real scoop, as it happens. They’re keeping things updated almost by the minute!

They have a post up about how to help too. It’s here for those of you wanting to find out what you can do. Good luck guys!

Some calm before the storm

Hard to believe the month of June is almost over! Where did the time go? Guess that’s what’s to be expected when I stay this busy, huh? Well let’s catch up a bit and then let the storm bring it on.

Been going to PT (physical therapy) lately for my knee. Seems it developed a bit of a problem since last Fall. It’s getting better so that’s good. The extra gas it’s taking to make the 3 visits a week is getting old!

The new Alabama Star Wars costuming group’s site is coming along slowly but surely. They’ve got a great graphic artist among their ranks too. I’ll simply refer to him by his username of “Kenobe” here but let me tell you his work is top-notch.

We’ve been busy installing galleries, sites and all sorts of cool, new things for their new site so when it goes live, it should be something to gawk over. (more…)

Visual Impact

Humorous Pictures

I came across this image when I visited my daughter’s blog this morning. The link led to another site with humorous images of various animals. The one above really caught my eye.

This is a good example of visual impact. The central focus is of course the cat’s head between the buns, then the caption. This is when the point (or pun in this case) becomes obvious.

How well you design a website will be the controlling factor for the visual impact a visitor gets when they see it for the first time.

Imagery, focus, layout, and content all contribute to the overall effect you are working for.

Remember that when designing a page or site, it’s how your site’s visitors will see and comprehend it that will ultimately be the deciding factor in it’s success.

What do you think good visual impact should be?

Just the right look!

Found a theme on the Wordpress Theme Directory this morning that just seems to fit the overall look I was interested in for the blog here. The name of this one is High-Tech 1.2 by GetTemplate and is a technology type theme for Wordpress blogs.

I think it’ll fit just fine. What do you think?

Friday Update

The Mystic BirdBeen a busy week. Had another blog that I author that the database and Wordpress connection went south on for some unknown reason. At least, at this point in time it’s still unknown. I’m still pouring over the logs to see if it had anything to do with a hacking attempt. Sure as hell hope not.

Reworked the blog from it’s old domain name to another I had and am presently chasing down links in order to let folks know and to begin the long road to restoring my SEO. Not fun. If you’re into techy type stuff about Linux, web design, web hosting, etc., give it a try and see if you find anything there interesting. The blog is called The Mystic Bird and is actually fun to read at times.

501st Legion | Vader\'s FistAlso the ball got rolling on a new site and forums for a local Star Wars group that is looking for a fresh start. This should be interesting as I really like Star Wars! Some of the best special effects I’ve seen plus the characters are something else. :)

Add to this the rework on my design site and you see why I’m saying this was a busy week. The old design was getting long in the tooth and I’m wanting to freshen it up a bit. Change can be a good thing.

Finally, still looking for a good theme for this blog. Yeah, I know. I could always do one myself but, this really needs to be something more along the lines of “plug n play” right now because well, you’ve read this far haven’t you? ;)

Have a great weekend folks!
